Firstly, let's start with the process of powder metallurgy, as the processing technology of any powder metallurgy component is similar. Generally, it is: product and mold design - mixing - pressing and debugging on the mold - sintering - machining or finishing - heat treatment - polishing and oil immersion - quality inspection and packaging. Some may need to be electroplated or blackened. After processing and polishing, remove burrs before electroplating and blackening.
According to the production process, all powder metallurgy parts need to be molded according to their dimensions and then tested on the machine. Small molds for parts usually start from a few thousand to tens of thousands of yuan, and the manufacturing cost of molds is also quite high. If the quantity of a part produced in bulk is only a few hundred or even a thousand, then there is no need to consider powder metallurgy processing. The first is the high cost of mold opening, and the second is powder metallurgy. Depending on the size of the product, the minimum order quantity is generally at least tens of thousands of pieces. Creating a set of molds for 5000 takes a day to assemble, and producing only a few hundred products does not bring much profit to both buyers and sellers. In summary, parts with a large order volume are suitable for customized molding, and it is recommended to choose machining for small quantities.
The machining tolerance of powder metallurgy parts has a range of variation. In the case of incomplete finishing, the general shape tolerance varies within 3.5 thousandths, and the height tolerance is within 0.15 millimeters. The shape tolerance after sintering and secondary precision re pressing can vary within 2.5 thousandths, and the height tolerance can be within 0.1 millimeters. But there is a limit value for both the inner and outer diameters, with a minimum outer diameter limit of 0.02 millimeters and a minimum inner hole limit of 0.018 millimeters. So if the machining accuracy is too precise, CNC machining or powder metallurgy should be considered before machining,
Powder metallurgy is made by pressing iron powder, and its actual density is lower than that of related materials. So there is a slight discount compared to the material components in terms of density and strength. If the parts require the same density, heat treatment, and strength as the material parts, powder metallurgy is not suitable for customized processing.
The processing of powder metallurgy parts is formed by automatic forming presses or injection machines, so parts that are too large are not suitable for powder metallurgy processing.
